Easter road toll: zero

Police have congratulated road users for their safe driving over the Easter long weekend with only two crashes recorded in the Greater Bunbury area.

South West Traffic Division coordinator Sgt Mark Smith told the Bunbury Herald there was only two minor incidents recorded over the four-day weekend.

Yesterday there was a four car crash near the intersection of Brittain Road and Robertson Drive about 10.20am.

Some passengers suffered minor injuries and the scene was cleared by police within an hour.

On Thursday night police attended a crash in Bunbury where a woman drove through a stop sign and crashed into the driver’s side of a car with a mother and her two young children inside.

The mother was taken to Bunbury Hospital with cuts and bruises and released shortly after.

The driver was charged with contravening a stop sign and was fined.

On Sunday afternoon a driver was recorded doing more than 70km over the speed limit.

A police multanova recorded a vehicle travelling 183kmh in a 110kmh zone.

‘‘I’d like to give a big thank you to those who obeyed the road rules.’’

Drink driving was targeted by police over the weekend and Sgt Smith said alcohol was a common cause of car crashes.

‘‘On Thursday there were 1000 drivers stopped and breath-tested and only one person was charged with driving with an excess blood alcohol level of 0.05,’’ he said.

‘‘It has certainly been a focus of ours and we did tell people we would be out in force.’’

Sgt Smith urged drivers to continue their good behaviour for the rest of the year.

‘‘It would be great if this was maintained all year round,’’ he said.

‘‘You can see it on the roads, people are more calm and more courteous on the road.’’

The owner of the vehicle will be contacted by police.

Sgt Smith said he was pleased there had not been any deaths on regional roads.

‘‘The response from drivers has been terrific,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s brilliant that this is the third year in a row where we’ve had no loss of life.’
