Eaton bounds over Bulls

MARK RAVIBunbury Herald

A trying season for the Harvey Bulls continued on Sunday when they hosted reigning premiers the Eaton Boomers.

The home side was blown out of the water by the sharp passing and superb fitness of the visitors to lose 21.11 (137) to 5.4 (34) as field umpire Peter Franklin celebrated his 250th game.

Eaton’s ability to either run and carry or accurately pass by foot or hand was too much for an outmatched Harvey side.

However, more impressive than the Boomers’ skill and athleticism was the unselfishness of its players, who did not hesitate to move the ball quickly whenever the play demanded it.

No player was a better example of this than Jace Cormack, who busted his gut running the field and setting up others, while also putting through a couple of goals for himself when the opportunity presented itself in a best-on-ground performance.

Robert Saylor was the best for a dismal Harvey side and kept his composure battling to contain Jake Ferrier for most of the afternoon but the powerful Eaton forward still managed to nab seven goals for the game.

The Boomers started off slow in the first quarter, trading goals with the Bulls, before rattling off six unanswered scores to end the term, including Ferrier’s fourth major from as many shots in the period.

Harvey trailed by 35 to start the second quarter but looked a lot more competitive, although it did not result in much of a change to the score.

The home side managed to slow the Eaton attack but the visitors did not do themselves any favours with errant kicking in the quarter on a few good looks inside 50 as they ended the half up 13.4 (82) to 3.3 (21).

The Bulls came out of the gate flat after half-time, managing only a single point in the third quarter as the Boomers kept the ball in their attacking 50 for much of the period.

Harvey managed back-to-back goals in the final quarter but Eaton responded with Ferrier scoring another three majors, although he had to be disappointed with his accuracy after the first term because he could have easily bagged 10 for the game.
