Eaton unbeaten

JIM BUNBURYBunbury Herald

The Boomers dug deep in trying conditions to reel in the Magpies after being 14 points down at three quarter time to finally win 11.8 (74) to 7.7 (49) at Sir Stuart Bovell Park on Saturday night.

In the final term Boomer Christopher Atthowe was outstanding in his team’s four goal victory while team mate Leigh Kelly booted two goals in the last stanza to end the Magpies evening.

The Magpies, aided by a strong wind, blew out to a handy lead only to have Eaton forward Leigh Kelly snatch back a goal from a free kick in the dying minutes of the first quarter.

Midfielder Kyle Hams delivered a best on ground performance for the Magpies and was instrumental in helping skipper Daniel McGinlay, who was in exceptional form, open the scoreboard for the Magpies.

Josh Hewett bagged the Magpies’ second before team mate Tim Iaonnou combined with Sean Trombetta to get his first for the night.

Boomers coach Richard Barnard’s quarter time spiel insisted his players kick to advantage when kicking long with the wind which is precisely what Jye Cormack and Kane Bloxsidge did, setting up Matthew Buchanan and Stephen Kane for consecutive goals.

The Boomers eventually subdued McGinlay’s influence and booted another two before Magpie Aiden Fraser managed to peg the Boomers lead back to three points at halftime.

After the main break Busselton rejoiced having the wind advantage again by kicking ahead. The Magpies added three goals via Trombetta, Adam Dehring and Nathan Bradbury while Boomer Atthowe opened his account.

Magpie Hams had his quietest quarter for the evening after receiving much warranted attention from the Boomers but it was not quite enough to stop the rover from starring in Dehring’s goal.

The final term saw the titanic struggle between the two sides become lopsided.

After the last change Busselton threw their big forward Brent Hall back to defend their lead but it was to no avail as the Boomers kicked five unanswered goals with the wind to close out the victory.
