Everybody loves a good story

Every child loves to have a story read to them and on Thursday last week primary school students across Australia enjoyed just that — at the same time.

Marking National Simultaneous Storytime, Bunbury Primary School students gathered in excited anticipation to enjoy an animated reading from Feathers for Phoebe by school principal Shane Doherty.

Organised each year by the Australian Library and Information Association, the event highlights the importance of reading and literacy for children by demonstrating how reading can be a fun experience.

While the rest of the school listened attentively as this year’s book was read, a group of students wearing vibrant costumes acted out the story of self acceptance.

Reflecting on the story, Year 5 student Jade Burnett said she thought the book had an important message.

‘‘Phoebe was a bird who didn’t get noticed but the book’s message is that everyone is beautiful and special inside,’’ she said.

One of the students lending his acting talent to the story, Year 4 pupil Charlie Coulson said he was proud to have been part of something so big.

‘‘It’s hard to imagine heaps of people around Australia reading it at the same time,’’ he said.

Mr Doherty said the day reminded students of the old fashioned fun books offered.

‘‘In this increasing digital age it is really important that children still experience hearing a story read to them and gain a sense of joy from books,’’ Mr Doherty said.
