Fev's second half magic sparks HBL

RILEY STUARTBunbury Herald

Brendan Fevola booted six goals to lead Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault to an 11.9 (75) to 8.5 (53) practice match victory over Busselton on Saturday night.

The Lions trailed by two points at the long break but Fevola flicked the switch in the second half, registering five of his majors on his way to a haul of 6.3.

Busselton defenders Lance Lucas and John Meadmore took it in turns to watch the two-time Coleman medallist and held their own for much of the game at Brunswick Oval.

Fevola was not the only new face for HBL.

Ashley Thornton returned after seven seasons with Peel Thunder and booted two goals.

Despite carving a regular place in the Thunder’s league squad with 103 matches in seven season, he started 2013 in the reserves, kicking eight goals in three games.

Former Brisbane ruckman Llane Spaanderman also donned the maroon and gold and was among the Lions’ best.

For the Magpies, Aidan Fraser finished with three goals and Brock Monck two.

Premiership stars Daniel McGinlay and James Price also shone in front of a crowd of about 1000 people.

When SWFL action starts this weekend, the Lions will host Donnybrook in a Saturday twilight fixture at 4.30pm.

Busselton starts its premiership defence against Harvey Bulls at Sir Stewart Bovell Park on Sunday.
