Fitness first in school program

Bunbury Herald

Adam Road Primary School has introduced fitness testing in a bid to promote a healthy lifestyle among students.

Year 3 to 7 students are put to the test using the Australian Council of Health, Physical Education and Recreation method which measures growth, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance and muscle and joint flexibility.

Principal Larry Gleeson said a high priority was given to health and fitness at the school.

‘‘From a school point of view it’s good to know where the students’ fitness is at,’’ Mr Gleeson said.

‘‘It’s also for parents to know where their children’s fitness levels are at compared to other children Australia-wide.

‘‘If their children are well below average we can provide information for different sporting clubs around the area.’’

Mr Gleeson said although schools played an important role in the health and wellbeing of children, parents also had to play a bigger part.

‘‘Children should be active for about 60 minutes per day, five days per week and it’s up to the parents to make sure children are active on weekends and during school holidays,’’ he said.
