Panthers 'rob' Bulldogs on the siren

Carey Park 138 def Bunbury 132

Some of Hollywood’s best script writers would have been impressed with the way that Carey Park wrote the ending and ‘‘stole’’ the inaugural Nani Family Cup from Bunbury by six points at Kelly Park on Sunday.

With only minutes remaining, the Bulldogs held what most thought was a match-winning, six-point lead until the Panthers’ Liam McGuire steered through a goal to level the scores.

A score from either side would have won the game with only 12 seconds left and it was the Panthers who gained the centre clearance that eventually ended in the big hands of full forward Matt Martin who took a pack mark to line up on goal after the final siren.

Needless to say Martin split the big sticks to see Carey Park victorious 21.12 (138) to Bunbury 20.12 (132).

Harv-Bruns-Lesch 127 defeated Donnybrook 48

Reigning premiers Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault leapt from the bottom of the league ladder into seventh position when they easily accounted for a struggling Donnybrook by 79 points at Brunswick Oval on Saturday.

The Lions were without Andrew Siegert and Mitch Cornell and were somewhat apprehensive going into the game, but Daniel Lewis soon blew away any pessimism.

On his way to a 13-marks, 15-kicks and four-handballs game, Lewis took five towering marks in the first quarter and booted three of his five goals for the game.

Mix-up hands Maggies win

Busselton 83 defeated Aug-Marg River 79

Busselton have maintained their unbeaten opening to the South West Football League season in the form of a four point victory over arch rivalsAugusta-Margaret River on Saturday night.

But the victory at Gloucester Park did not come without controversy.

Holding an eight point lead at the final change, pandemonium marred the start of the last quarter as a mix-up on the Hawks’ bench saw the home side begin the period with 19 players on the field.

When brought to the umpires’ attention, both sides had to line up and headswere counted with the resulting free kick and 50m penalty bringing about Busselton ruckman Brent Hall’s fifth goal and a dramatic momentum shift.

The Magpies went on to take the lead and hold on for a 13.5 (83) to 12.7 (79) triumph—their third in succession.
