Football: Kelly runs amok in Boomers' big win

BRENDAN RHODESBunbury Herald

Donnybrook's trip along the road to recovery was stopped in its tracks by a mob of kangaroos on Sunday.

In fact, the Dons were blocked by 22 Big Red Boomers as Eaton showed them how much further they have to travel in a 100-point SWFL belting at Glen Huon Reserve which secured the Peter Butcher Cup for the fourth straight year and narrow the head-to-head deficit to 5-4.

The leader of the mob was full-forward Leigh Kelly, who kicked five goals in the first quarter and saw off John Hearman, Chris Billings and Cris Sheehan on his way to a haul of 11.2 in the Boomers’ 25.19 (169) to 11.3 (69) win.

Kelly should have had 13, with his two misses being within 15m of goal.

Jacob Ferrier was also unstoppable up forward, booting 6.2 in a strong display of power marking. T

he Boomers dominated in the midfield, with Chris Atthowe showing his class, while Jace and Jye Cormack, Michael Battaglia and Gino Catalano ensured Kelly would have plenty of chances.

Daniel Billson provided a strong target for Donnybrook with two goals in the opening term, but the visitors went to the first break down by 27 points and with co-captain Sheehan on the bench after being yellow carded for a late bump on Battaglia.

If the first term was tough, the second was a nightmare for the Dons as the Boomers flexed their muscle, piling on 7.8 to 0.0 to lead by 77 points at half-time and put the result beyond doubt.

Donnybrook refused to give up and fought on to the final siren, kicking five goals in the third term and three in the last to put some respectability on the board.

Kris Clarkson was tireless rucking unchanged after quarter- time with regular big man Matt Coker camped up forward, where he kicked three goals.

Billson worked hard after being shifted to half-forward, while Jarred Guglielmana tried hard and Milan Kokir stuck to his task on Jace Cormack.

Beanpole youngster Josh Branchi showed plenty and looks likely to become a key part of the Boomers’ push for that elusive premiership in 2013.
