Football: Panthers continue resurgence

DARREL COCKRAMBunbury Herald

Carey Park continued its mid-season resurgence with a 36-point victory over Harvey- Brunswick-Leschenault on Saturday night.

The Panthers led by nine points at the final change before a six-goal burst wrapped up the 16.7 (103) to 9.13 (67) win at Brunswick Oval.

Tim Yarran and Joel Coyne were standouts for Carey Park, with Yarran booting four vital goals, while Coyne found a lot of the ball in the midfield.

The Panthers also got a lot of drive from Brayden Lawler and Callum Leslie while wingman Viv Blurton was busy.

Matt Bicknell was one player who kept the Lions in the game with his strong marking and ruckwork around the ground, while skipper David Newman, Travis Obal and Ash Thornton were strong contributors.

Newman got the Lions on the board early and Obal added another, but for the most part they were playing catch-up football.

When the Lions looked likely to get a run on, experienced Panthers Brent Fotheringham, Corey Stidworthy, Cody Garlett or Mark Bevis kicked the timely goal.

Thornton’s two goals in the third term put the Lions within striking distance.

But Stidworthy snapped a beauty off his right boot at the start of the last to trigger a Carey Park goal feast.
