Football: SWFL Round 14 Wrap Up

JOSH ZIMMERMANBunbury Herald

The South West Football League threw the form book out of the window in Round 14 with three sides registering upset wins that could have massive repercussions for finals contenders.

In the biggest shock of the round Bunbury overcame a 21-point halftime deficit to hand the high-flying Eaton Boomers its first loss of the season.

Led by captain Jesse Gribble and forward Codey Hay the Bulldogs came storming back after the long break to win 10.7 (67) to 8.17 (65) and keep their slim finals hopes alive.

The Boomers were left to rue missed opportunities with three set shots within 30m of goal drifting wide in the final five minutes of the game.

Harvey handed Augusta-Margaret River its second consecutive loss courtesy of a clutch Dan Davis set shot in the final moments of the game at the Harvey Rec Ground.

The Bulls took an eight point lead in to the fourth quarter but needed Davis’s last gasp major to secure a 10.11 (71) to 10.9 (69) victory over the stunned Hawks.

Not to be outdone by their nearby neighbours, Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault also upset a finals contender recording a one-point win over Busselton at Brunswick Oval.

The Lions had not led since the fifth minute of the game but snatched the points through a Chris Strano goal just seconds before the final siren.

Second-placed South Bunbury closed the gap on the Boomers with a resounding 19.7 (121) to 5.11 (41) victory over Carey Park at Kelly Park.

The Tigers outclassed the Panthers across the ground and enjoyed a wide spread of goal kickers but were led by Leigh Kohlman with four majors and Damon Bull and Guy Piggott who kicked three apiece.

In Saturday’s game Collie ran Donnybrook off the park in a convincing 14.18 (102) to 4.8 (32) win at VC Mitchell Park.

The Eagles were never really challenged by the Dons but were especially impressive in the final quarter where they held the home side goalless while kick six majors of their own.
