Football: SWFL Round 2 Wrap
Last season’s grand finalists Busselton and Collie Eagles continued their indifferent start to 2013 after both teams slumped to defeats in round two of Plunkett Homes SWFL action at the weekend.
South Bunbury shocked the listless Eagles at the Collie Recreation Ground on Saturday night, claiming a 26-point victory.
The Tigers, who finished ninth last season, jumped Collie with a blistering first quarter and were never seriously threatened on their way to an 11.15 (81) to 7.13 (55) win.
Meanwhile, reigning premiers Busselton were downed by last season’s wooden spooners Donnybrook 13.10 (88) to 10.6 (66) at VC Mitchell Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Dons applied tremendous pressure the ground over and opened up a 38-point lead mid-way through the second term before Busselton hit back.
Jeff Smith was back to his best for the committed Dons line-up, kicking five goals including three in the last quarter when the home side was challenged.
In his first game, Cris Clarkson was best on ground for Donnybrook while ruckman Matt Coker dominated the hit-outs.
Busselton defeated Harvey Bulls in round one while the Eagles are yet to taste victory after losing to Eaton Boomers in the opening week of the season.
In other games, the Boomers continued their impressive start to the year with a 16.12 (108) to 5.4 (34) victory over Harvey Bulls on Saturday afternoon and Augusta-Margaret River claimed a comfortable 19.11 (125) to 10.7 (67) win over Bunbury under lights at Gloucester Park.
On Anzac Day, livewire forwards Cody Garlett and Arron Hill both booted five-goal hauls to spearhead Carey Park to a 12-point victory over Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault.
Gartlett, who played in the reserves in round one, proved a point on the field by starring in the 17.12 (114) to 15.12 (102) triumph in front of a healthy crowd at Kelly Park.
The Boomers moved to the top of the ladder after the thumping 64-point triumph over the Bulls.
Eaton overcame a slow start and some wayward goal kicking at the Harvey Recreation Ground to claim the convincing result.
