Forza's triple triumph

Bunbury Herald

Bunbury's Forza Dragon Boat Club made a major statement on the water earlier this month, claiming a hat-trick of mixed titles at a regatta in Perth.

Forza’s crews triumphed in the 200m Mixed 20s, 200m Mixed 10s and Mixed 2km time trial at Perth’s Champion Lakes on January 20.

Clubs came from around the State to take part.

With the 200m Mixed 20s division and 200m Mixed 10’s titles already in the bag after impressive performances earlier in the day, the 2km time trial was a nail-biting race.

Starting from the back of the field Forza had to battle the wake from boats in front.

Holding an even split time with Perth-based club Lakers coming into the final turn, Forza had to bring their boat to a halt to avoid a collision with another crew.

Once the water was clear sweep Paul Harrison called for a full race start and urged the crew to finish the race at 500 metre race pace.

Pulling back the Lakers with every stroke, Forza hit the lead as they crossed the finish line ensuring that all three mixed titles came back to Bunbury.

The next regatta – Round Four of the Dragon Boating WA series – will be held on February 10. Forza Dragon Boat Club paddlers celebrate their three victories on January 20 at Champion Lakes in Perth.
