University and high school students have united to create artworks for an exhibition that opened at Edith Cowan University South West this week.

Students from the Newton Moore Girls Academy worked alongside art students from ECU and Bunbury artist Claire Pendrigh in a program called Just a Bit of Art.

The exhibition showcases artworks produced from the 10-week program.

Taylah Holden was one of the ECU students sharing their skills with the 23 Newton Moore students.

Ms Holden and fellow ECU art student Kiri Wicks guided the younger students through creating their own version of a pulp fiction novel cover. Instead of a “penny dreadful” they named a “dollar horror”.

They also worked with textiles, printmaking, sculpture and painting.

“It’s so much fun to see girls start at the beginning and not know what they are doing then at the end be able to see what they are capable of, ” Ms Holden said.

Newton Moore Girls Academy provides indigenous girls with training to complement their school curriculum and prepare them for employment or further study.

Ms Holden said the ECU students asked the girls what topics they would like to study at the beginning of term and took their preferences on board.

The exhibition runs until October 31 in Building 3.
