Give blood this year, and save a life

JESSICA PORTERBunbury Herald

Bunbury's Red Cross Blood Service is urging you to give the best Christmas gift this year — your blood.

Bunbury Blood Donor Centre team leader Sue McKenzie said around the Christmas and New Year period, blood donations could decrease as people were busy making plans for the holiday season.

But she said the need for blood usually increased.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs 4300 people around the State to roll up their sleeves in the two-week period over Christmas and New Years.

Blood Service spokeswoman Jackie Kallen said this time of year was one of the most critical.

‘‘If you only donate once or twice a year, this is the time to make an appointment — one hour of your time could mean a lifetime to the person who receives it,’’ Ms Kallen said.

Bunbury’s blood donor centre requires an average of 200 donations per week to help meet the State’s need.

Ms McKenzie said the blood type that was always required was O negative. Blood of this type can be used for people with all blood types.

She also said plasma donors were also required, especial plasma that was AB, A or B.

Bunbury’s centre is the largest in regional WA and is the only regional centre that can take plasma donations.

To make an appointment, call 131 495 or visit donateblood.com.au.

Bunbury Blood Donor Centre is open Monday to Friday with evening appointments available.

The centre will be closed December 24 to 28
