Golfers will take to the greens this month for the second annual South West Refuge Golf Day.

The event has become the Bunbury Women’s Refuge’s biggest fundraising event, last year raising $13,000.

Refuge chief executive officer Julie-Ann Lorca hoped to beat that this year but said she would be happy with any amount.

The golf day is open to players of all abilities.

Mrs Lorca said people could also just attend the charity auction dinner that night.

“Last year there was a cross section of people, from people who had never picked up a golf club, to people who played very well, ” she said.

Money raised last year went towards improving the refuge to make it safer and more comfortable for the women and children who stayed there.

The fund also contributed to the women and children’s services.

Mrs Lorca said providing a comfortable place for the women to find refuge was important.

“The women who come to us are escaping terrible situations and when they come to us they come with nothing, ” she said.

The crisis accommodation centre helps more than 400 women and children from across the South West every year.

The South West Refuge Golf Day is on September 19 at Mercure Sanctuary Golf Resort.

Teams of four cost $600 and tickets to the charity auction dinner are $50.
