Hawks no match for classy Panthers
Apart from a decent crack in the third quarter by the Hawks, Carey Park was rarely threatened and clinical in its use of the football to record a 15.12 (102) to 6.12 (48) victory at Gloucester Park on Sunday.
Panthers captain Matthew Martin enjoyed a goal spree, bagging six by half-time, while teammate Desmond Corbett was admirable in defence during his team’s 54-point victory.
Carey Park appeared patient and controlled the tempo very early, ensuring they utilised possessions of the football and selected the right options when going forward.
Martin was a massive target in the forward line for the Carey Park on-ballers and effortlessly shrugged off the Hawks defenders booting consecutive goals in the opening minutes of the first quarter.
The Hawks replied when Hamish Shepheard combined with Ben Gerrans who supplied Maui Murphy.
However it was all Carey Park as Martin seemed unstoppable when teammates Jake O’Mara, Damien Stevens and James Sabire linked up to get their power forward his third.
Tim Yarran intercepted a kick out of defence to boot the Panthers fourth before Brayden Lawler spotted Jordan Aitken in front to wrap up the scoring for the term.
In the second quarter Hawks’ superstar Shepheard sprinted up the non-members wing and centred the football to find big man Simon Andrijich who scored the Hawks’ only goal before Martin unleashed for the Panthers, booting three for the quarter with the third off the back of a sensational hang.
Hawk Mark Semini landed in hot water after a boundary umpire reported him for striking Corbett late in the term.
After the main change Augusta-Margaret River found its mojo as stalwarts Shepheard, Andrijich and the Gerrans brothers collaborated starting from the wing to provide Mitch Payne with their team’s first of four for the quarter.
Shepheard featured again, this time in Samson Thorson’s first, the youngster taking a superb pack mark and booting his second shortly before Shepheard himself marked a spearing pass from Josh Morgan and snared a goal.
Panther Arron Hill sold some foot candy and kicked successive goals while teammate Chris Rintoul laid a terrific shepherd freeing up Shane DeCampo who scored dead-on the siren.
After the final change the Hawks fight back fizzled out as they were held goalless in the fourth by the Panthers.
Lawler pinpointed Martin for his seventh before he received a yellow card for releasing a reckless swipe at a Hawk.
David Roche bombed one from outside the arc before Lawler fed Aitken again, this time for his second, and Hill capped off the Panthers afternoon with his third.
