New signs will be installed along an extended Forrest Highway after a decision by Landgate’s Geographic Names Committee.

Forrest Highway now runs from the end of Kwinana Freeway near Mandurah to the Eelup roundabout in Bunbury, renaming Australind Bypass and one section of Old Coast Road.

The decision to rename 57km of the road was made at the committee’s June 5 meeting to clear up confusion caused by the road’s three names.

Main Roads WA will replace Australind Bypass and Old Coast Road signs to Forrest Highway signage along the stretch of road during the coming weeks, with the changes to be completed within a month.

Main Roads WA South West director Brett Belstead said there were surprisingly few signs to change, and the update would only take days once the signs were made.

“There are a few on side roads, and a few bigger ones that need to be changed, ” he said.

Mr Belstead said Main Roads WA had notified the owners of 11 properties that would be impacted by the change.

“We’ve given them mail redirection forms, and we’ll sort out 12 months of mail redirections with Australia Post for them, ” he said.

Geographic Names Committee will notify mapping agencies and Australia Post of the change.

Mr Belstead said changing the name of such a major road was quite unusual.

“We’ve changed the names of smaller roads and new roads that people don’t live on but this is probably one of the bigger ones because everybody uses it.”
