Historic bells ring out for community support

Bunbury Herald

The St Boniface Cathedral fundraising committee is asking for help get some historic bells installed.

The cathedral was recently given eight bells from St Leonard’s Church in Shoreditch, London.

The bells, the oldest of which dates back to 1739, were donated by West Australian bell ringer Laith Reynolds.

Committee member Kathy Chiera said the gift of the bells depended on their timely installation.

‘‘We’re looking for the assistance of the community and businesses to get behind this project,’’ she said.

The main costs of the installation will be the bell frame and labour.

‘‘Volunteers have already offered to provide engineering and drafting skills,’’ Ms Chiera said.

People can provide small monetary donations, sponsor a bell or provide materials or labour needed for the installation.

All donors will be recognised with a plaque which will be displayed in the cathedral.

The bells were made famous by the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons, and once installed at the cathedral will be the second-oldest set of ringing bells tuned to each other in Australia.

Phone the cathedral on 9721 3970 for more information.
