Hockey: Strikers strike back
The oldest and youngest players bracketed a comprehensive South West Strikers Willow Bridge Cup victory over Newman Knights at the Busselton Hockey Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Little pup, Matt Williamson, slotted a goal in the first minute to set the Strikers on their way to a 3-0 victory while former captain and coach, Matt Mellor wrapped it up in the last minute with a superb reverse stick shot.
With Knights sitting level on points with leader Joondalup Lakers and having defeated the Lakers the week before it was a big scalp for the improving South West Strikers.
Teenager Williamson was first to strike when he nudged in a pass from Sean Beckett after a strong raid up the right flank to put the favoured Knights on the back foot.
After an even, entertaining first 10 minutes rangy veteran Corey Letts, showed his paces with the second goal.
The entire Strikers team worked as a unit with Geoff Neaves, Aaden Buck and several superb saves by goalkeeper Tim Bray the best in defence while Nayton Colombera, Williamson and Nicoli were the pick of the midfield.
After the game, coach Allan McGeoch said the team’s finish was not to the standard of their general play.
‘‘Of course I’m pleased with the win but they can play better than that,’’ he said.
