Hockey: SW strike mixed fortunes

Bunbury Herald

There was elation and heartbreak for the South West Strikers at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The elation came for women’s captain Kiri O’Brien who slotted her first hat-trick and Aimee Harris her umpteenth in a 10-0 demolition of Joondalup Lakers.

The heartbreak was for the men who lost 1-0 to the Lakers in their fight for fourth spot on the ladder.

The women’s team defeated Joondalup 9-0 earlier this season and once against swamped their opponents.

Goals to Tahnee Buchanan, Jenna Gmeiner, Carly Williamson and two O’Brien strikes made it 5-0 at half-time.

Aimee Harris added three goals after the break, while O’Brien and Buchanan also scored.

The men’s disappointment was forged from a lack of finish.

The Strikers forced eight penalty corners to none but were foiled by the heroics of Lakers’ goalkeeper Nick Gabriel and doughty defender Jonathan Bales.

Pacy Pierre Quesnet put the visitors on the board with a scrambled goal at the 22-minute mark and despite having chances, the Strikers Aimee Harris scored three goals for the South West Strikers women’s team in their 10-0 victory. could not find an equaliser.
