Joel's ride to fight MND

Aaron Corlett, BUNBURY HERALDBunbury Herald

Joel Knott will ride 3400km across the nation next month to help his father and other people who live with motor neurone disease.

The Bunbury-raised resident will cycle from his home in Melbourne to the city where he grew up and where his family lives to raise money for the Cure for Motor Neurone Foundation.

Mr Knott said he was undertaking the 20-day journey because his father Percival lived with the disease and the journey, dubbed PK Cycle, was named after him.

"I grew up close to the beach and I was always swimming and so when I moved to Melbourne I got into triathlon and cycling," he said.

"The idea behind the cycle was to do something to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease but I understand that it is a challenge on a high level."

Mr Knott said he started training in May with a coach but he believed the mental aspect of the journey would be just as difficult as the physical exertions of the ride.

"The stress levels are going to be high at times but I've got a support crew who are going to help me and I hope to do around 180km each day," he said.

Mr Knott said it was a difficult time for the family when his father was diagnosed with the disease in 2004.

"It's quite an aggressive disease so I try to fly over from Melbourne once every month to see him," he said.

"My mum looks after him daily so I try to give her a break but we get support from local nurses as well."

Mr Knott said his father was excited he was undertaking the challenge and raising money to help find a cure for the disease.
