Kevin's bark is highlight of ball

MARK RAVIBunbury Herald

Saving Animals From Euthanasia founder Sue Hedley travelled from Karratha to attend the first SAFE Bunbury Annual Ball but Kevin the Kelpie was the star on Saturday night.

Kevin and his owner, Peter Frisina, were on hand to present $1500 raised by the sale of the One Year with Kevin the Kelpie 2015 calendar to SAFE Bunbury.

Ms Hedley said the former pound dog called to mind another famous kelpie.

“The South West got their own ‘Red Dog’ by the look of it, ” she said.

“Kevin’s become a bit of a town entity… he’s a bit of a star, I can tell.”

Held at the South West Italian Club, more than 200 people attended the charity ball, which SAFE Bunbury president Mark Townsend described as a “huge success”.

“The event raised about $8000, which we thought was incredible, ” he said.

“More importantly, we also raised awareness for our foster caring.”

Mr Townsend said the money raised by the event would be spent providing veterinary work for animals that became sick.

SAFE Bunbury struggled when it started in 2006, but Ms Hedley said the branch had progressed

“It was just so rewarding to come back in 2014 and to see how the branch has grown, ” she said.

“To have people who are really committed to the cause who are all working together — that was the most outstanding thing I saw.”
