Kids can connect to Muckheap

LESLEE HALLBunbury Herald

From improvising with paper to making rabbit ears out of plastic containers and playing with all sorts of junk in between, a visit from a classic children’s play this school holidays is sure to delight the young and young at heart.

Muckheap, from internationally-renowned theatre company Polyglot Theatre, will visit Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre this month as part of the final leg of a 12-year touring season.

The fun and interactive show centres on two friends who are forced to move out of their home which is being demolished for a new development.

As they pack up their belongings, the pair stumbles across memories and copes with their massive amount of possessions by throwing themselves into a story illustrated with whatever is at hand.

Director Sue Giles said children and adults alike connected with the play because of the strong themes and the interactive nature of the show.

“Two people being kicked out of their rental house and having to clean up all their years of stuff is something we can all relate to – moving is a really hard thing to do,” she said.

“Kids really connect strongly to the play as the adults perform with authenticity that is childlike.

“They’re adults having a kooky time and kids see that as hilarious because they are used to seeing them as the authority figure.”

With everyday objects turned into something completely different, Sue said one of the main aims of Muckheap was to make children believe they could make things happen themselves.

“If you can empower people to go away from an experience with the idea they can do it too, that’s awesome,” she said.

“I love it that we encourage mess and chaos – that’s a rare thing. A lot of kids who grow up in sterile environments.”

After 12 years touring with the show and taking it to places such as Singapore and the United States, Sue said seeing the show come to an end was like saying goodbye to a child leaving home.

“It’s always really hard when you make something and it’s been so successful and such a pleasure to work on, it’s really hard to say goodbye,” she said.

Muckheap will be performed at BREC on April 23, at 11am and 1pm.

For bookings call BREC ticketing on 1300 661 272 or visit the foyer ticket office.

Fun-filled theatre show Muckheap visits Bunbury for the first time in its 12-year history this school holidays with an interactive show sure to capture the imagination of children and adults alike.
