Kyra's back after horror fall

RILEY STUARTBunbury Herald

Perth Cup winning jockey Kyra Yuill will return from a nine-week injury lay-off for three rides at Pinjarra Park tomorrow.

Yuill, who made history last December when she became the first female jockey to win the Perth Cup, has not ridden since she was dislodged from her mount during a race at Belmont Park on September 8.

The gun apprentice suffered bleeding on the brain and broke her ankle in the horror fall.

Yuill will ride Raquel Mills-trained mare Blue Sasso, who is resuming after breaking her maiden status in a brief winter campaign, and will also take the reins of four-year-old gelding Diggers’ Reward in the first and First Flight in the last tomorrow – both trained by her father, Graham.

Yuill said she was relieved to make a return and had been riding horses at track work for two weeks.

“Surprisingly, I’ve felt really good, but the first day (of track work) I just rode a couple and probably didn’t pull up as flash as I thought I would have,” Yuill said.

After having her ankle in a cast for six weeks, Yuill has had a mixture of physiotherapy, aqua therapy and acupuncture to improve her mobility.

“Now it feels better than the other one,” she joked.

Following tomorrow’s meeting, Yuill will ease back into competition with three rides at Northam on Friday.

Despite her comeback, Yuill will not ride her father’s galloper Maschino in the $1 million Railway Stakes (1800m) as part of Ascot Racecourse’s “Super Saturday” celebrations this weekend. Maschino ($9.50) will have his admirers in the Group 1 staying feature after an impressive win in the $125,000 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) on Saturday with hoop Jarrad Noske on board.
