Labor promises Capel police station

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan has promised to build a police station in Capel if Labor wins government at the next State election.

In last week’s Budget reply, Mr McGowan highlighted Capel, Ballajura and Secret Harbour as prime candidates for a police station.

Opposition police spokeswoman Michelle Roberts told the Bunbury Herald the Capel community deserved a police station.

‘‘There has been community outcry and they are very concerned about not having a police presence,’’ she said.

‘‘It is a sizable community and in our view it warrants a station of their own.

‘‘It can’t be properly covered by Bunbury police.’’

Ms Roberts said Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray had brought the need to Labor’s attention.

She said that if elected, a Labor government would look at opening a day-time police station as quickly as possible.

‘‘It is certainly a priority for us,’’ Ms Roberts said.

‘‘They have absolutely missed out.

‘‘The so-called ‘hubbing’ policy that is being run at the moment we don’t think properly supports the community.’’

Police Minister Rob Johnson backed up previous statements that the area did not need its own police station.

‘‘The effectiveness of stations within the South West Police District is constantly reviewed by the District Superintendent to ensure a responsive policing service is provided to the area,’’ he said.

‘‘WA Police have determined that there is currently not sufficient reported crime or calls for assistance to justify a police station in Capel and other areas would be considered in more need.

‘‘WA Police officers actively patrol the Bunbury sub-district, including the Shire of Capel and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.’’
