Mixed weekend fortunes for Slammers

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers had a mixed weekend in both the women and men’s leagues, with both side’s beating Perry Lakes Hawks on Friday night before losing to the Cockburn Cougars the next day.

For the men it was an emphatic victory 109-93 on Friday night, with playing coach Ty Harrelson (28 points) and import Tre Nichols (22 points) leading the charge from start to finish.

Brian Voelkel was again dominant on the boards, grabbing 16 rebounds in a dominant display.

Then on Saturday night the men were unable to go back-to-back as the Cougars led from start to finish to win 96-89.

Gavin Field was dominant for Cockburn, scoring 24 points and grabbing seven rebounds, while Harrelson continued his good weekend with 30 points.

Nichols was fouled out late in the last quarter, while Voelkel grabbed 20 rebounds.

Kate Fielding inspired the women’s side to a 72-56 win on Friday night, with the co-captain scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds in a great performance.

Patricia Bright (22 points) and Deonica McCormick were also handy throughout the game, while the Slammers’ bench showed its depth.

Then on Saturday Bright tried to get the women across the line, scoring 22 points but it was not to be as the Slammers lost 91-76.

Deanna Smith was absolutely dominant for the Cougars, scoring 39 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and having 11 assists in an easily best on court display.
