Netball: Coach laments lost opportunities

Bunbury Herald

The Griffin Souwest Jets’ State Netball League losing streak has been extended to nine consecutive matches after suffering a pair of defeats to perennial powerhouses Perth at the weekend.

The Jets were no match for the Demons who sprinted to twin victories in back-to-back clashes at the Eaton Recreation Centre, winning 64-45 on Saturday night before coasting to a 54-25 triumph on Sunday.

Since making an initially promising return to the SNL last month when winners in their opening twofixtures, the Jets have since slumped to nine consecutive losses ina seven-week period that has proved an acid test for the club’s depth stocks.

On Sunday, South West trailed 11-6 at quarter time and were significantly outplayed thereafter as Perth showed the class that has seen them unbeaten to date.

The home side scored at an accuracy of just 52 per cent for the afternoon and were forced to negotiate both games without star wing attack Bianca Romagnolo and captain Teneille Treloar.

In the face of the competition’s toughest side, the Jets’ mid-court effected five crucial turnovers in the third period, but the goalies were unable to capitalise inside the circle as the attacking combination of Zoe Alberti and Lauren Johnston did not make their shots drop.

After Sunday’s match, coach Michelle Willsher lamented her side’s ability to convert their chances.

‘‘All we ask is that we have the opportunity and we had that,’’ she said.

‘‘We shot poorly, very poorly in the second half but we had the opportunity.

‘‘You would imagine that against a team that hasn’t lost a game and is full of quality players that we shouldn’t get the opportunity but we did so we’re on the right track.’’

South West will tonight clash with the Coastal Sharks in Perth.
