New course record for SW Open
Victorian young-gun Kris Mueck fired a blistering six under par 66 on WA Day to finish -12 and claim a run-away triumph in the 2012 Nexus South West Open.
Trailing overnight leader Terry Pilkadaris by one shot heading in to Monday’s final round, Mueck played some dazzling strokes at the Bunbury Golf Club en route to the comfortable victory.
Leading WA amateur Brady Watt was a surprise runner-up at -8 while Pilkadaris tied for third with three-time WA PGA and WA Open champion Kim Felton at -7.
The tournament had action from the outset.
South Australian Paul Spargo set a new course record on Saturday’s opening round when he returned to the club house with a jaw dropping nine under 63.
Spargo birdied four holes on the front nine and five on the back to set up a six-shot lead heading in to day two.
But rounds of 78 on Sunday and 77 on Monday ensured he finished down the leaderboard.
Although Mueck’s efforts on the final day were not enough to set a new record, some of his shots were among the best seen on course for some years.
