Officers get clip around the ears

NICOLE ASHERBunbury Herald

Police officers from the Hot Fuzz Relay for Life team opted for a buzz cut during a visit to Australind Primary School on Thursday.

Sen. Const. Steve Delane and Const. Kahn Le Prevost-Shepherd, from the Australind Police Station, left the hair cutting to the primary school students to raise money for the Cancer Council.

The school community raised more than $200 for Hot Fuzz. The team will spend 24 hours walking as part of a fundraiser in November.

Sen. Const. Delane said he shaved his head alongside his wife and son after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and decided to do it again to raise funds this year.

“We drove onto the school oval and turned the sirens on, ” he said. “It was like we were the Pied Piper.”

He said he had been growing his hair for a number of weeks in preparation for the shave.

Six students manned the clippers, taking turns to shear both officers’ hair into a mohawk style, before giving them a close shave. Although both the officers’ haircuts required some fine-tuning after the chop, they escaped without injuries.

Australind Primary School principal Darrin Tinley said the students and teachers donated money for the chance to shave the officers’ heads.

“It was a gold coin donation and then names were drawn out of a hat to shave their heads, ” he said.
