Michael McMillan and skipper Matt Martin booted three goals each as Carey Park earned its first premiership points of the season in a 15.14 (104) to 12.8 (80) Anzac Day victory over Donnybrook on Friday.

The Panthers were able to overcome the absence of influential midfielders Brayden Lawler, Scott and David Roche to record the win and maintain Carey Park’s perfect Anzac Day record.

After a solitary behind to the Dons the Panthers took full control of the first quarter, recording the next 11 scoring shots which included goals to Tim Yarran, McMillan, ruckman Michael Robinson and former Bulldog Riley Hutchinson.

Playing in his first South West Football League game in over a year, Robinson was a force around the stoppages and helped ensure that Donnybrook struggled to find an exit from its back half for much of the contest.

Former Perth Demon Jason Brennan ended the one-way deluge with a snap over his shoulder to get Donnybrook on the board at the end of the first and the Dons held the momentum throughout the second quarter, kicking four goals to Carey Park’s two to narrow the gap to 18 points at half time.

The sides split the honours in an even third quarter, a booming Simon Parry goal from well beyond the 50 and a superb crumbing effort from Panther Cody Garlett the highlights of the term.

Parry unloaded twice more from beyond the 50 to start the fourth quarter and narrow the gap to just seven points before Martin began to assert himself on proceedings, kicking a pair of goals to put the result beyond doubt.

Tempers began to boil over in the closing stages with Hutchinson red carded for striking.
