Panthers end Collie’s hopes

MITCHELL WOODCOCKBunbury Herald

Carey Park have continued their push for a top three position and double chance in this year’s finals, while ending Collie’s finals chances with a 31 point win at Kelly Park on Sunday.

The Panthers midfield put extreme pressure across the ground on the Eagles who were unable to find space, with the hosts winning 12.16 (88) to 8.9 (57).

Led by Reece Richardson and Brayden Lawler, Carey Park played three quarters of finals-like football, pushing Collie wide and giving their forwards little space to lead into.

Panther’s ruckman Michael Robinson continued his stellar form this season with his ruckwork being A-class and his field presence giving Carey Park an easy out when under pressure.

Eagles’ leading forward Tony Mirabella was well held for three quarters by reliable defender James Sebire before he was taken off the ground after a heavy collision.

The Panthers looked to be on a mission from the first bounce, as they kicked the first four goals before the Eagles managed to get one through vice-captain Adam Bignell.

From here the game became a lot more contested, as the Panther’s game plan came into action.

Eagles’ half forward Chris Cross and captain Matt Blackford were consistent throughout the day, but too many Eagles refused to go hard at the contest and suffered from a lack of penetration.

Just before half-time things got heated with Talan Michael and Cross both receiving yellow cards after heavy marking collisions.

The Panthers had the game sealed by the last break, with a 43-point lead and seemed to have pushed their minds towards finals as they eased off.
