Perth ends Slammers' Eaton winning streak

RILEY STUARTBunbury Herald

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers’ fortress was stormed by the Perth Redbacks on Friday night, who snapped the home team’s five-match home hot streak with a seven-point victory.

Led by Jay Warren (27 points) and Trent Worthington (25 points) the Slammers had their chances for victory.

The Slammers out-rebounded the Redbacks 53-36 but could not make the most of their dominance on the glass, fudging several lay-ups in the 101-94 loss.

After the visitors were slapped with two tech fouls early in the third quarter, the Slammers pounced and opened up a 10-point lead.

But Jarrad Prior got Perth back into the game in the final term, hitting back-to-back triples to hand his team the lead mid-way through the last.

Prior finished the match with 21 points in just 24 minutes on the court while Bennie Lewis (23) and Joel Wagner (18) were also standouts for the Redbacks.

It was a forgettable 400th SBL match for Slammers’ veteran Aaron Edwards, who started brightly but injured his hamstring and spent only eight minutes on the floor.

But the Slammers bounced back to defeat Kalamunda 98- 90 in Perth the following evening to retain their place inside the top eight.

It was the Slammers’ first away victory of the season as they held on to defeat the Eastern Suns at Lesmurdie.

The Slammers led by 21 points at three-quarter time but were outscored by the fastfinishing Kalamunda 28-15 in the final term.

Luke Nevill scored a gamehigh 35 points for the Eastern Suns while Warren (26 points, nine rebounds), Clive Weeden (22) and Wade Hitchcock (18) were the Slammers’ best.

Meanwhile, the Slammers’ women defeated Perth 63-52 on Friday night but went down to Kalamunda 79-76 on Saturday.

Kim Sitzmann hit 22 points against the Redbacks and a whopping 37 against the Suns.
