Police warn Dalyellup speedsters

Bunbury Herald

Police will have a higher presence in Dalyellup after figures revealed up to half of the vehicles were speeding past a multanova.

A camera set up on Dalyellup Boulevard on Tuesday and Norton Promenade on Thursday revealed up to 50 per cent of vehicles were speeding when going passed the multanova in the 50kmh zone.

“Police officers will be out there a lot more in the future,” South West traffic Sgt Craig Clarke said.

“The camera operator had to check with Perth because he didn’t think those stats could be right, but they were.”

Data from the camera on Dalyellup Boulevard showed manyvehicles were going more than 10kmh over the speed limit.

“It’s that 10kmh that can make all the difference,” Sgt Clarke said.

He said police were assessing when the peak traffic times on the two roads occurred so they could target bad drivers.

“We will be more intelligence led,” he said.

“We could also look at speed reduction measures for the roads.

“Dalyellup is not the only area where people are speeding, but it’s among the worst.”

Sgt Clarke said last week’s data was especially distressing considering school zones were along the two roads.

“Hopefully we can talk to the schools about impressing on students the importance of being careful near the roads,” he said.

Sgt Clarke reminded drivers that a lot of people had families and police did not want to be knocking on doors because a child had been in a crash.

“We urge people to expect the unexpected because it you’re going 70kmh or 80kmh, you’re not going to stop in time if a child steps out on the road,” he said.

“For a lot of drivers, their behaviour is not conducive to the road laws.

“People’s speed and other negatives like using a mobile phone are just a recipe for a disaster.”

Drivers can face up to a $1000 fine and seven demerit points for speeding.
