Pros dominate Bunbury Surf to Surf run
Sunday's Surf to Surf Fun Run was dominated by a trio of high-class entrants in the 5km event.
Professional triathletes Ryan Bailie and Christopher Owens finished first and second with Paralympian Brad Scott not far behind in third.
In overcast and windy conditions Bailie completed the course in a blistering 15min. 11sec., falling just shy of his pre-race goal of breaking the quarter hour barrier.
Owens crossed the line in 16:14 with Scott rounding out the top three in 16:39.
Carolyn Boosey was the first woman across the line in 18:37 with last year’s winner Courtney Butlion, 12, second in 19:31 and Maryanne Pemberton third in 22:02.
Francisco Sanzana claimed line honours in the 10km event in a more than respectable 31:12 with Bunbury runner Peter Andrews second in 33:11 and James Hunter leading home a big group of runners in 37:23 to finish third.
Liana Annison led all women to finish in 38:18 with Rosemary Giles (40:52) second and Selina Webb (42:14) third.
Gary Hastie won the men’s 5km walk in a time of 27:58 with Echo Stretch taking out the women’s honours. in 28:20.
A total of 1199 runners braved the poor weather conditions to hit the pavement at Back Beach for the annual Surf to Surf event, which is a major fundraiser for the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club.
