Protesters air mining objections

Bunbury Herald

Environmentalists took their objections to the South West mining industry to the steps of the Sanctuary Golf Resort during an industry conference last week.

The protesters said they were angry the conference would not address climate change, water conservation or the detrimental effects of extractive industries.

The South West WA Resources Developments 2011 conference aimed to ‘‘tap into the major resurgence inmineral exploration and development that the South West of WAis currently experiencing’’, conference organisers IIR said.

Representatives from numerous mining companies, including Alcoa Australia, Iluka Resources and Simcoa Operations attended the two-day conference, which included presentations about sustainable mining operations.

As the representatives left the resort for a tour of the Bunbury Port, the protesters stuck stickers on their bus which said: ‘‘Your greed is killing our planet’’.
