Rampant Strikers continue goal spree

Bunbury Herald

The rampant South West Strikers women continued their barnstorming run on their home turf in Bunbury with a handy 4-1 victory over second-placed Suburban Lions last Saturday.

The victory, set up by a second successive hurricane start, elevated the Strikers to second on the Promotion One women’s hockey league ladder, enhancing their already competition-leading goal difference.

Coach Sue Nettleton had reason to look a little smug after the match, saying simply: “they’re improving.”

Like they did the week before against Hale, the Strikers ripped into their opponents with a flurry of early goals — two in the first five minutes by goalsneak Jenna Gmeiner.

After half time Tahnee Buchanan climbed aboard the gravy train with goal, courtesy of a superb pass from Aimee Harris at the 47-minute mark before Harris banked one for herself with a scintillating short corner off keeper Anna Livingstone’s pads.

Meanwhile, the Strikers’ men completed the double with a 3-0 victory over Kalamunda at Melville on Sunday to stay in touch with the four.

The Strikers piled on three goals to Dave O’Brien, Corey Letts and Elliot Barton before Kalamunda packed its defence.
