Ready to roll on Bunbury skatepark facelift

The Bunbury Skatepark is about to enjoy a much-needed upgrade.

The City of Bunbury has set aside $95,000 for the project, which will entail resurfacing of the concrete and metal coping.

“The park suffered significant damage three years ago and the council has been looking to repair it since that time,” City of Bunbury landscape architect Myles Bovell said.

“I understand the park was built about 1993, so considering its age and the general amount of wear and tear, it’s about due for a refurbishment.”

The City has engaged renowned skatepark design company Convic to complete the work.

Convic is one of the top-rated skatepark design and build companies in the world.

The nature of the work will mean the skate park has to be closed for about four weeks from November 26 – but it should reopen in time for the school holidays.

Bunbury residents and skating enthusiasts Mitchell Hannigan and Chase Hawk said they were glad to hear of the park’s impending repairs.

“It will be a bit inconvenient while the park is closed, but definitely worth it,” Hannigan said.

Sabine Heidt, from the skate park action group Better and Bigger Australind Skatepark, said the refurbishment was great news for skaters from the South West Region.

“Most of Western Australia’s skateparks are seriously lacking when compared to their eastern States counterparts,” Mrs Heidt said.

“I think any upgrade will be welcomed by skatepark users.”

Skaters can head to the Capel, Australind, Eaton, Boyanup and Gelorup parks during the refurbishment.

The Bunbury Skate Park is due to reopen on December 21.
