Record week for volunteers

ERIENNE LETTEBunbury Herald

Last week was one of the busiest weeks in local volunteers’ lives as they worked tirelessly to clean the city after two damaging storms.

Bunbury SES, FESA and firefighter crews worked multiple 13-hour shifts in an effort to clear massive damage the two storms caused.

They were supported by crews across the State who travelled to provide back-up for dozens of local people.

More than 20 SES volunteers also flew in from South Australia to provide respite for local volunteers.

Bunbury SES volunteer Colin Keys said the week had been tiring but rewarding.

‘‘The reason we joined is to help people so it’s great to do that,’’ he said.

‘‘But I am glad that it’s over and to have a sleep.’’

Mr Keys — who has volunteered for nearly five years — was called in on Sunday afternoon and didn’t stop until Friday afternoon.

He said the storm had been one of the worst he had seen.

‘‘When the tornado came through the damage was in a line so we could kind of follow it,’’ Mr Keys said.

‘‘This was just everywhere.’’

Mr Keys said that events like this often drained the volunteer resources and any donations would be gratefully received.
