Relay funds help cancer charity
There were plenty of sore feet and smiles when the 2015 Relay For Life Bunbury-South West finished at the weekend.
People from around the region gathered at Payne Park to do laps for 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday to help raise about $270,000 for the Cancer Council.
Event leadership team chairman Leigh Ritchie said there was 55 teams and about 1000 people who attended this year.
"It was another incredible weekend during which the community came together to share experiences and raise money," he said.
"The teams raised a huge amount of money and it will make a real and meaningful difference for the Cancer Council and people affected by cancer."
Mr Ritchie said he believed the South West's event compared well with Relay for Life events around Australia. "When you consider the population of Greater Bunbury is about 80,000, I think we do better than a lot of metropolitan events," he said.
"The Summit Realty South West team were once again the grand champions after raising $61,500 this year and the team has raised $750,000 since first being involved in the event."
Cancer Council Relay for Life coordinator Richard Grieve said he believed the efforts of the community were remarkable.
"The participants deserve to be recognised and their efforts in raising money which will help the Cancer Council's support centre, which is Dot's Place," he said.
"The funds help the Cancer Council with the numerous classes it will also be used for research, which can help all West Australians."
