No diesel leaked into the Preston River after Wednesday’s truck crash on Estuary Drive, despite the truck losing hundreds of litres of fuel.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Regulation said about 200 litres of diesel was spilt after the fuel tank ruptured, but she said none flowed into the waterway.

Last Wednesday a truck towing two trailers become wedged on a bank of the Preston River after the driver failed to negotiate a bridge on Estuary Drive.

The spokeswoman said containment booms were floated downstream from the crash on the Preston River.

“The Department of Fire and Emergency Services bunded the river downstream from the truck as a precaution, ” she said.

“However, the Department of Environment Regulation can confirm that no diesel was discharged into the river.

“As a result of the truck crash, an estimated 200 litres of diesel was spilt onto the soil from a ruptured fuel tank.”

An excavator was used to free the truck after fuel was siphoned from the truck’s tank.

Main Roads WA removed the soil that had been contaminated by the spilt fuel and disposed of it at a suitable landfill site.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
