A history of helping others has earned Esther Van Kampen a lucrative scholarship as she pursues her dream of becoming a vet.

The Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School graduate, now in her first year at Murdoch University, has been chosen as one of six students to receive The George Alexander Foundation Rural Accommodation Scholarship.

She will receive $24,000 over three years, including $7500 for accommodation and $500 in Coles vouchers each year.

“It’s hard financially being a regional student coming to the city, ” Miss Van Kampen said.

“This means I can work on my studies instead of working.”

Miss Van Kampen is based at the Murdoch University student village and is studying animal science and hopes to qualify as a veterinarian in the future.

While still at school Miss Van Kampen donated her time to Riding for the Disabled and the West Australian Endurance Riders Association, helped build a community centre in Cambodia and volunteered at an orphanage.

She won the Zonta Club of Bunbury’s Young Women in Public Affairs award last year.
