Slammers’ fortunes mixed

JORDAN McARDLEBunbury Herald

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers with the women continuing their record-breaking season but the men losing both of their Round 13 fixtures.

The women extended their l e ad on top of the l adde r to three games with a convincing 70-60 defeat of the Mandurah Magic on Friday night before really hitting their straps to give the Stirling Senators a 90-55 hiding at Warwick Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Guard Kara Hargreaves and centre Zoe Harper were the standouts against Mandurah with 15 and 14 points respectively as the Sl ammers kept their unbeaten home record in tact for 2012.

Stirling become the Slammers’ next victim the following night, with Harper’s doubledouble (19 points and 13 rebounds) and import Kim Sitzmann’s 18 points leading the way to their fourth straight win in emphatic fashion.

It was a different story for the men who lost in a nail-biter against arch-rivals Mandurah on Friday night, blowing a three-quarter time lead to fall by four points.

Despite the best efforts of imports Carlos White (32 points and 16 rebounds) and Senario Hillman (24 points and eight rebounds), the Slammers went down 99-95 at Eaton Recreation Centre.

Things didn’t get any better on Saturday night, with an unsuccessful road trip against the Stirling Senators.

White was gallant in defeat, registering his fourth doubledouble in a row with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

The 202cm forward has been in devastating form, averaging 28 points and 12 rebounds in his last five matches.

Hillman also produced, scoring 21 points in the Slammers’ disappointing 116-73 loss.
