Students ‘giants’ in sustainable living

Bunbury Herald

It is a small world at Dardanup Primary School — so small in fact it has the Year 7 students feeling like giants.

The year group has built a miniature sustainable village which they will display at the Dardanup Bull and Barrel Festival, themed It’s a Small World.

Taking great pride in the four week project, students submitted scale drawings for approval before building, and then evaluating, their houses.

Year 7 teacher Jo Perry said students embraced the hands-on learning.

‘‘A lot of the kids have commented that they would now build a sustainable house which is my goal to have them do,’’Ms Perry said.

‘‘We integrated the project into the maths learning area, technology and enterprise learning area and we did computer research and looked into the factors that are important whenplanning a sustainable home.’’

Excited to exhibit her house in the festival, ShenaeTelini said she felt like a giantwhenshewalked amongthe miniature village and had learned a lot.

‘‘I learnt lots of things actually — what you need for a sustainable house,’’ she said.

‘‘My house doesn’t have any greenhouse gasses and it doesn’t hurt the earth.’’

The festival will be held at the Dardanup townsite on October 15 from 10am and is expected to attract more than 8000 people.
