Eight Cooinda Primary School students who channelled their passion for the environment into two short films have won tickets to the Kids Teaching Kids Conference in October.

The competition is run by the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training in support of the Kids Teaching Kids initiative, founded by 2001 Young Australian of the Year Arron Wood.

Cooinda Primary School teacher Jeffrey Scott said the project allowed students to educate one another about environmental issues.

“When kids are working peer to peer they have a level of communication that parents and teachers might not because they are on the same wavelength, ” he said.

“They get to see that these issues are important because they see that other students care about a future they all share anyway.”

The national program encourages teachers to allow students to teach one another about local environmental topics through student-led workshops.

The winning videos will be shown to more than 400 people at the Kids Teaching Kids conference in Mandurah from October 29 to October 31.

Mr Scott said his students showed teamwork and initiative to win the competition.

“Teamwork, communication, research were all skills they had to use for real world application, ” he said.

“A number of students in the eastern States would have entered to cover the cost to get to WA so it was hotly contested.”
