Students in Cooinda Primary School’s Year 5/6 class spent the last month before the school holidays digging deep and tending to a vegetable patch.

To celebrate the Cancer Council fruit and vegetable month, the students have been building scarecrows and writing recipes for healthy eating.

Year 5/6 teacher Di Toia said building scarecrows helped the students appreciate the fruit and vegetable garden.

‘‘The school has become a veggie and fruit friendly school,’’ Ms Toia said.

‘‘As a school we have pulled together and are giving the children healthy eating options.’’

Ms Toia said it had been great seeing the whole school community get behind the projects.

The school is hoping to get a raised garden bed and is looking to create a community garden in the future.
