Students treasure their pirate day

Bunbury Herald

Bunbury Primary School was overrun by buccaneers from the high seas as pre-primary students celebrated Pirate Day on Thursday.

The pre-primary playground was converted into a pirate’s paradise complete with ships, treasure chests and an abundance of plastic eye patches.

The two participating classes took part in a tug of war and cannon ball tossing competition, but the highlight of the day was when they stormed principal Shane Doherty’s office and held him hostage until he met their ransom demand of a chocolate cake.

Bunbury Primary School associate principal Franca Dillon said the day was not all about fun and games and it was a good reward for the students’ hard work during a sea-themed learning module.

“The pre-primary students have been learning about all sorts of sea-related topics for a while now,” she said.

“Kids really respond well to theme-based teaching, and allowing them to dress up like they have today helps them engage with the topic they’re learning about.

“Parents enjoy the dressing up aspect too and it’s really just a fun day for everyone involved.”
