Supermarket donates needy farmers

Farmers from areas of the State affected by drought, including the South West, will share in $150,000 donated by Woolworths this festive season.

A day’s profits from the supermarket’s fresh produce sections around the State were presented yesterday morning to the CWA and Salvation Army, who will now distribute the money to farming families doing it tough.

CWA president Maggie Donaldson said the money would be placed in the Sir James Mitchell Education and Welfare Fund and every dollar would be sent to families in need.

Woolworths regional manager for WA Brad Bolin said although the east coast was experiencing drenching rains, WA farmers had been left wanting.

‘‘We thought it was a great way to put back something into the communities — the farmers support us and we support the farmers,’’ Mr Donaldson said.

WA Farmers president Mike Norton said it was a great morale boost for farmers to think the wider community was prepared to help.

‘‘It certainly helps struggling farming families at Christmas time, perhaps for a holiday, perhaps a few extra things at Christmas — it’s the little things that tend to be forgotten about when you fall on hard times,’’ Mr Norton said.
