The most important meal for kids

Bunbury Herald

Children who do not eat before school are getting a much-needed energy boost at Maiden Park Primary School, thanks to the breakfast club held at the school canteen.

Every morning students can head to the canteen to choose from a variety of breakfast foods, which are donated from the local Foodbank.

Youthcare chaplain and breakfast club coordinator Emma Strong, said the initiative was important at the Withers-based school.

“The students at the school need a breakfast club, we have seen a large increase in the children’s ability to concentrate in class with the kids who eat breakfast, ” she said.

“We then know these children have had a good healthy breakfast and we have fewer problems with them throughout the day.

“We have children who come here for their weetbix, they get their breakfast and they are happy.”

Ms Strong said the breakfast club was not only good for the children’s stomachs, but also teaches life skills.

“It is not just nutrition we are giving them but we are also giving them an opportunity to eat with other people, sit at a table and use their manners and wash and dry up, ” she said.
