Thousands honour the Anzac spirit

More than 5000 people lined the streets in front of the Bunbury War Memorial for the Anzac Day dawn service on Friday.

The dawn service included an address by guest of honour Captain Darron Kavanagh CSC RAN, the ode recited in Maori and English and the New Zealand and Australian national anthems.

Bunbury RSL branch president John Gelmi said the Bunbury Men of Song were a moving addition to the dawn service.

“It just set the atmosphere so well for the whole day, ” he said.

RSL life member and former president Alfred Mainstone was thrilled by the attendance, including many young patrons and service men and women.

“There are certainly a lot more of the younger generation embracing Anzac Day, more than ever, ” Mr Mainstone said.

Michelle Forkin came from Perth to attend the ceremonies, in honour of her father Mark Forkin, who was a former officer-in-charge at the Bunbury Police Station.

“My father was born in Bunbury and was in the air force, ” she said.

The dawn service was followed by a Memorial Gunfire Breakfast held by the Westbrook family and the official morning ceremony at the Graham Bricknell Memorial Music Shell.
