Volunteer bound for Africa

Bunbury Herald

For five weeks Australind resident Therese Colman will give her time in a foreign land to help those less fortunate than her.

Miss Colman will head to South Africa in January with the not-for-profit organisation International Student Volunteers, where she will do volunteer work with those in disadvantaged communities.

Miss Colman said she had chosen community and social development work, meaning she would work in schools, community centres and child care.

“Some other people on the program have opted for conservation so they will be working on the land and with animals, ” she said.

“I want to do this is because last year when I travelled to South America it truly opened my eyes to the poverty and circumstances people live in and I promised myself that the next time I went abroad it would be to help make a difference.”

Miss Colman volunteers regularly for the South West Disabled Surfers Association and helped at this year’s Chefs’ Long Table Lunch.

“I really look forward to taking my time and energy overseas and also to explore such a magnificent country, ” she said.

Miss Colman has held a number of raffles over the past few months to raise money, with local businesses providing help by donating prizes.

Money raised goes to the International Student Volunteers to pay for resources for the trip.
